Since we opened our office in 1955, our main goal has been to stand out as the premier optometrist office in Lexington, KY. To do that, we have created a comfortable atmosphere so all of our patients, from adults to children, feel welcome. At Abel Klecker & Robbins, we believe that everyone should have access to affordable eye care.

We make sure our office is a relaxing place where each one of our patients can discuss their eye troubles without fear of judgment. We understand that people don’t always follow the recommended care of their contact lenses, and if they are not honest with us, we aren’t able to advise them on the best products for their lifestyle. For example, we might be able to recommend gas permeable contact lenses if you regularly sleep in your contacts or daily lenses instead of weekly or monthly lenses.

What to Expect at Your Eye Exam:

  • Visual Acuity Tests & Refraction Tests-What everyone expects at an eye exam. This is when you look at a chart, usually through a handy machine and the doctor will ask you which letter, number or image is sharpest.  
  • Dilation of Pupils-The easiest way for the doctors to see inside your eyes. The most commonly known practice is with eye drops, but there are modern ways to dilate your eyes that don’t have as long of lasting effects. It is always a good idea to bring sunglasses with you to your eye exam so you can avoid sensitivity to light on your way home.  
  • Slit Lamp Exam-Most people would recognize this as the scary machine you have to put your whole face in, resting your chin on a support bar and placing your forehead on a rest. It should not be scary at all, however! This machine examines the structures of your eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, iris, and lens. During this exam, doctors will be able to detect diseases like cataracts, macular degeneration, corneal ulcers, and diabetic retinopathy 
  • Ocular Motility Test (Eye Movement)-Helps the doctor determine how well your eyes can follow a moving object and also how well you can focus on two separate targets. (During this part of the eye exam, your optometrist is able to determine if you are straining your eyes during everyday activities like reading and driving.)
  • Depth Perception Test 
  • During an initial eye exam, you will also receive a color blindness test. This test helps to rule out color blindness or hereditary color vision deficiencies.     
  • Retinoscopy-this part of your eye exam is done early get an idea of the prescription you will need if your eyesight is not 20/20 or greater. The doctor will dim the lights and use a light to help determine the prescription needed based on the way the light reflects off your eye. This exam is commonly used for children who have a hard time with the comprehensive questions associated with an eye exam.

Your eye exam will take about 20-30 minutes and then we will fit you for your glasses or contacts, whichever you prefer. Other tests are performed with specialists if it seems like you are at risk for eye disease. Your optometrist will refer you to the right type of specialist, in those cases.
